Anglo 5Headline News ‘A Great Humanitarian’: NATO considers naming new HQ after US Senator John McCain
Fort Russ | The new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Brussels is to be named in honor of the late US Senator John McCain at the request of a British MP, CNN said on Wednesday.
NATO has received the request, which will be carefully considered by the alliance’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, CNN said, citing NATO spokesman Oana Lungescu.
Earlier this week Tom Tugendhat, the UK’s conservative parliamentarian and chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, sent a letter to Stoltenberg requesting that the new facility be dedicated to the late Arizona senator.
“Very few people embodied the values that Nato is built on in the way Senator John McCain III did. He was a warrior and a statesman. He fought in wars and he fought for peace,” Mr Tugendhat, 45, said.

McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, was diagnosed with rare and aggressive brain cancer in 2017 and died on Saturday at the age of 81.
In a statement following his death, Stoltenberg called McCain a strong proponent of NATO and someone who will be remembered for his courage and character.
NATO’s new $ 1.45 billion headquarters opened at the end of April.
