Boko Haram Pledges Allegiance to ISIS
Nigerian Islamist terror group Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS and its leader Abu Baker al-Baghdadi in an audio statement released on YouTube on Saturday. The statement, from Boko Haram leader Abu Baker Shekau, was published by Al-Uruwa al-Wuthqa foundation, the official media wing of Boko Haram. Shekau said his group made the decision because “the caliphate is the only cure for the conflict of the Islamic nation.” He also urged Muslims all over the world to pledge their allegiance to the Islamic State under Baghdadi.
The pledge follows a spate of suicide bombings in Boko Haram’s territory in the north of Nigeria which left 50 dead.
Some observers question whether pledges of allegiance to ISIS are truly significant, or whether they are an attempt to latch on to its growing fame. But unlike other fringe groups, Boko Haram has gradually been adopting ISIS’ style in its propaganda videos, and has already taken to calling parts of Nigeria “The Islamic State.”
