‘Kiev, get up!’ 1000s of Saakashvili supporters demand Ukraine president’s impeachment

Thousands of supporters of former Georgian President and ex-Governor of Ukraine’s Odessa Oblast Mikhail Saakashvili rallied in Kiev, on Sunday, demanding his release from jail and impeachment of the country’s president Petro Poroshenko. After marching across the city center, they staged a rally on Kiev’s main Independence Square, the Maidan. Saakashvili’s wife, Sandra Elisabeth Roelofs, delivered a speech to the gathered people, which she finished with the words “Get up, Kiev, Ukraine get up!” Saakashvili, who now leads the Ukrainian opposition Movement of New Forces, was arrested on Friday for alleged criminal conspiracy.
