Swine flu, Bird flu 'never happened': Probe into H1N1 'false pandemic'

Swine flu is under scrutiny once again as pharmaceutical companies are being accused of hyping up a false pandemic. The Council of Europe is putting the virus on its winter agenda which is now underway. The Council of Europe's Head of Health also claims the World Health Organisation colluded with major drug companies and changed the definition of pandemic. Doctor Wolfgang Wodarg says it ensured maximum profits, but no risks, for the firms. Now, countries like Britain, France and Germany have stockpiles of vaccines lying unused, as infections spread far less than the panic surrounding it.

Swine flu ‘false pandemic’ claim

A leading health expert says the swine flu scare was a "false pandemic" led by drugs companies that stood to make billions from vaccines. Wolfgang Wodarg, head of health at the Council of Europe, claims major [drug] firms organised a "campaign of panic" to put pressure on the World Health Organisation to declare a pandemic. He believes it is "one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century" — and has called for an inquiry. Dr Wodarg said: "It's just a normal kind of flu. It does not cause a tenth of deaths caused by the classic seasonal flu. The great campaign of panic we have seen provided a golden opportunity for representatives from labs who knew they would hit the jackpot in the case of a pandemic being declared. We want to clarify everything that brought about this massive operation of disinformation. We want to know who made decisions, on the basis of what evidence, and precisely how the influence of the pharmaceutical industry came to bear on the decision-making." He added: "A group of people in the WHO is associated very closely with the pharmaceutical industry."

£500MILLION SPENT ON TAMIFLU BUT BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL SAYS IT DOESN’T WORK

TAMIFLU does not work on healthy patients who get swine flu, experts have claimed

An investigation by the British Medical Journal has found no robust data to prove that Tamiflu prevents swine flu from becoming a serious condition.

In what could prove an acute embarrassment to the Government, analysis by two teams of academics suggests that the benefits of Tamiflu were vastly over-estimated.

Of course, if something else (like a sprayed biotoxin) is causing the hemorrhagic cases (and that person does not also have H1N1) the test would be negative

CENSORED POLISH HEALTH MINISTER SHOWS  WISDOM OVER H1N1 SCANDAL

Censored YouTube cut the first upload down to 2 minutes !

Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP and Sir Liam Donaldson are thinking of profit before the health of the UK's population. Why is it that Mrs Ewa Kopacz the Polish Health Minister can see what is going on? Why can't they see what is happening? History will show in the future the grave mistakes the UK government is making. Millions of people will look down on these decision makers just like they have with Tony Blair a fine example of someone who is deluded by the evil decisions he has made and the human lives he has sacrificed in the name of the New World Order.

Could WHO announce the “return” of the Spanish Flu any day?

Professor Victor Bachinsky from the Ukraine has reported that the plague is not responsible for the many deaths seen there recently, but a virus strain that is “very toxic, and, if the immune system of the sick is low, it creates a bleeding in the lungs.”

“Thus, once the virus enters the lungs, hemorrhage begins immediately. oxygen circulates in no more normally in the pulmonary alveoli, which creates a insufficient cardio-pulmonary and does involve a shock response, and then the death,” he reports.

How to Prevent and Cure the Flu Naturally without a Vaccine

(NaturalNews) "If a doctor treats your flu, it will go away in fourteen days. If you leave it alone, it will go away in two weeks," said Gloria Silverstein. Drinking water, washing your hands, and getting enough sleep are important, but the most effective thing you can do to prevent any sort of flu is to boost your immune system. When your immune system is functioning properly your risk of contracting the flu is severely reduced.

Swine flu: Strain resistant to Tamiflu spreads between  UK hospital patients

Five patients on a unit for people with severe underlying health conditions at the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, were diagnosed with swine flu that is resistant to the drug. Three appear to have acquired the infection in hospital, the National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) said.

Two of the five have recovered and have been discharged from hospital, one is in critical care and two are being treated on the ward.

The service said the resistant strain does not appear to be more severe than the swine flu virus circulating since the spring.

All patients on the unit have been tested and patients diagnosed with Tamiflu-resistant swine flu have been given other antivirals.

World first as swine flu found in US cat

Vets in the US state of Iowa said Wednesday that a household cat had tested positive for swine flu -- the first known case in the world of the new pandemic strain spreading to the feline population.

The domestic shorthair, a 13-year-old castrated male, apparently caught A(H1N1) off its owners -- two of the three members of the family had previously contracted the deadly virus.

"This is the first cat that we are aware of with the pandemic H1N1," said Brett Sponseller, an assistant professor of veterinarian microbiology who helped treat the pet at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

After ruling out most common causes of respiratory diseases, a team of university and state vets looked at the family history of the owners and guessed swine flu might be the cause.

After five days of tests, their fears were confirmed.

Airports To Take Temperatures, May Quarantine  Passengers Exhibiting H1N1 Symptoms

With the holiday season just a few weeks away, health officials fear the swine flu will pick up right along with air travel.
New government guidelines are on their way, designed to help keep passengers healthy. This flu season, airport staff across the nation won't just be screening for security threats. They'll also be looking out for health threats – people who look like they may have the H1N1 virus.
The government says that people traveling internationally may be screened for the H1N1 virus as they leave or enter the U.S.

World Health Organisation Admits No Deadly Mutation of H1N1 Swine Flu

The World Health Organization, the UN agency (ir-) responsible for declaring a Phase 6 “PANDEMIC” global alert over what it calls H1N1 Influenza A or Swine Flu, whose chief Dr Margaret Chan has repeatedly warned that while Swine Flu to date had been rather mild, that the emergency declaration was necessary because it “could mutate” aggressively into a deadly pandemic killing millions, now admits well into the flu season in the Northern Hemisphere that H1N1 has apparently not mutated.

Regular flu is deadlier than swine flu.

It should be noted that regular flu is deadlier than swine flu. The common human seasonal flu kills more than 36,000 people annually. In contrast, the fatalities from swine flu are nowhere near the number of people killed by common flu.

2009 H1N1 Flu: International Situation Update

This report provides an update to the international situation as of October 2, 2009. As of October 2, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) regions have reported over 343,298 laboratory-confirmed cases of 2009 H1N1 with at least 4,108 deaths, which is an increase of at least 24,373 cases and 191 deaths since September 20. The laboratory-confirmed cases represent a substantial underestimation of total cases in the world, as many countries focus surveillance and laboratory testing only on people with severe illness. The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus continues to be the dominant influenza virus in circulation in the world. From April 19 to September 19, 2009, 59.8% of influenza specimens reported to WHO were 2009 H1N1 viruses. In temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere, disease due to 2009 H1N1 is declining or has returned to baseline. In tropical regions of the Americas and Asia, influenza activity due to 2009 H1N1 remains variable. In temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, there is increased influenza-like illness (ILI) activity due to 2009 H1N1 in many areas, including in most of the United States, parts of Mexico and Canada, some countries in Europe, and parts of Central and Western Asia.

Health chiefs introduce their latest weapon in the war against swine flu... a dice game

When swine flu first struck Britain the Government responded with helplines, distribution points for anti-viral drugs and a promise of a vaccine by Christmas.
But now health chiefs have unveiled a bizarre new tactic to combat the virus – a role-play game using a set of dice.
The Flu Pandemic Game, which can be downloaded from the Department of Health’s website, is for three to 60 players, takes around 90 minutes and has chance cards much like Monopoly

It should be pretty obvious by now who the REAL terrorists are. 50% OF DOCTORS SAY NO TO THE SWINE FLU VACCINE-

Doctor says FLU VACCINE will cause 60,000 deaths  in France alone

A vaccine is being developed in conditions of amateurism such as I have never seen. Lets take the pessimistic hypothesis: one death among every 1000 patients. There are plans to vaccinate 60 million people, and you so you already have 60,000 deaths, and this time, young people, children, pregnant women.”

“What you are saying is serious because many people are getting ready to get the vaccine and you, you are saying: „You must not get a vaccination!”

” YES, it is a vaccine that has been developed at great speed in conditions that put in danger the public health. There is a need to return back to the obligation that politicians have right now to protect citizens against the desire of the pharmaceutical industry to make money with all these vaccines. There is a public health code of law from 2007 which obliges all health professionals who give their opinions to reveal their interests. That law is ridiculed every day. All the people who you see saying: „the flu, its very serious, have interests, their lines interests, and that is why they say what they say. The public health administration is an example to us of a daily violation of the law. I am a medical specialist and I am against medicines that have no purpose. This vaccine is not just badly developed: it is not developed!

Health experts warn not to take Tamiflu pills

The Government is refusing to change its swine flu policy after experts said healthy people should not be given Tamiflu. The World Health Organisation advice directly contradicts British policy on the issue. The WHO said most patients were experiencing typical flu symptoms and would get better within a week, and Tamiflu should not be given to healthy people.A spokesman for the Department of Health said: “We believe a safety-first approach of offering antivirals, when required, to everyone remains a sensible and responsible way forward. “However, we will keep this policy under review as we learn more about the virus and its effects.”

Next step in H1N1 scare: Microchip implants

A Florida-based company that boasts selling the world's first and only federally approved radio microchip for implanting in humans is now turning its development branch toward "emergency preparedness," hoping to produce an implant that can automatically detect in its host's bloodstream the presence of swine flu or other viruses deemed a "bio-threat."
VeriChip Corporation currently sells a small, under-the-skin Radio Frequency Identification capsule, or RFID, that patients can opt to have implanted, containing a number computer-linked to their medical records, enabling doctors with a special reader to access the information even if the patient is unconscious or unidentified. The company boasts its microchip, roughly the size of a grain of rice, is the only such implant approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mass graves could be dug for autumn bout of swine flu

The government is planning to create a series of mass graves to cope with a second outbreak of swine flu in the autumn. A Home Office document warns that a mass burial site may be needed to cope with the potential crisis.

Massachusetts May Be A Forerunner of What's to Come

On April 28, the Massachusetts Senate unanimously passed a pandemic flu preparation bill that rises to the level of martial law. If approved by the House and signed into law, it will mandate among other measures:
-- "vaccination, treatment, examination, or testing of" all individuals involved in providing health care - as perhaps step one before ordering the same process for all state residents;
-- owners or occupiers of all premises "to permit entry into and investigation of the premises;"
-- closure, evacuation, and decontamination of all suspected facilities; and
-- restricting or prohibiting "assemblages of persons."
Other states may be planning similar measures as precursors to mandatory nationwide vaccinations and overall suspension of civil liberty protections.

World Health Organization Secrecy Surrounding the Swine Flu Raises More Red Flags

Since the Swine Flu 'pandemic' allegedly began, it hasn't made any sense. Now the WHO is reportedly refusing to release the minutes of a key meeting, that involves executives from Pharmaceutical companies standing to make billions in profits. The WHO claims there are no minutes of the meeting that took place on July 7th -- a meeting in which guidelines on the 'need' for worldwide vaccinations adopted by the WHO were formulated by the executives of large Pharmaceutical companies. One of the UK government's top advisors -- who was among the first UK 'experts' to call the outbreak a pandemic -- on Swine Flu is reportedly a sitting board member of GlaxoSmithKline, offering more evidence of the deadly fraud being perpetrated against the world's population by their governments.

Swine Flu Vaccination Poses Serious Threat to Your Health

Global Research 13 June:It looks like governments around the world will either force these vaccinations on the public or launch a massive propaganda campaign to trick you into submitting to a jab. If they attempt to force these untested and essentially experimental vaccinations on you, cite the Nuremberg Code, which states: “The voluntary consent of the human subject is essential.” No experimental vaccine should be “conducted where there is an a priori reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur, except, perhaps, in those experiments where the experimental physicians also serve as a subjects.

Swine flu pandemic 'caused by accidental leak from laboratory'

The swine flu pandemic may have been caused by an accidental leak from a laboratory three decades ago, scientists have claimed.
An investigation into the genetic make-up of flu viruses claims the pandemic may not have occurred, had it not been for the accidental release of the same strain of influenza virus from a research lab in 1977.
The Independent reported that researchers believe this strain of the virus had been extinct in the human population for more than 20 years until it was unwittingly reintroduced by scientists.

Your Mind is Your Best Weapon against Any Flu

This year`s flu of the year has made its appearance and with it, media buzz about vaccines, normal treatments, such as hand washing, and so on. Most "experts" have neglected one basic, free, non-invasive, yet therapeutic modality: mind over flu matter.

Metaphysical healer Louise L. Hay says that the mental cause of influenza is "Response to mass negativity and beliefs; fear; and belief in statistics." This is quite interesting in light of the media`s use of all three: statistics and mass negativity in order to create fear. For those susceptible to such fears, any flu strain would find a welcoming home.

The suggested antidote is the affirmation: "I am beyond group beliefs or the calendar. I am free from all congestion and influence."

Swine Flu May Have Infected More Than 100,000 Americans

While the official tally of confirmed U.S. swine flu cases topped 4,700 on Friday, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimate the true number of infections at more than 100,000 nationwide. Also on Friday, health officials announced two new deaths linked to the H1N1 virus, bringing the nationwide total to five."Today we had our fourth death reported from Maricopa County in Arizona," Dr. Daniel Jernigan, from CDC's Influenza Division, said during an afternoon teleconference Friday. "There are more deaths and hospitalizations that we are monitoring," he said.
The Arizona patient, a woman in her late 40s with an underlying lung condition, died last week, the Associated Press reported.

"Today there are almost 3,000 probable and confirmed cases here in the United States," she said. "The good news is we are not seeing a rise above the epidemic threshold."

Swine flu roots traced to Spanish flu

Pigs might have spread the current strain of influenza to humans, attracting worldwide attention, but new Canadian-led research suggests that we might have given pigs the flu in the first place, during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.
A group of Canadian and U.S. researchers, writing in the May issue of the Journal of Virology, say experimental testing of how pigs responded to the 1918 Spanish flu supports the theory that the virus was passed on from humans to pigs in 1918, during the Spanish flu pandemic.
Both the human influenza virus known as the Spanish flu and a swine respiratory disease occurred at roughly the same time. The first human cases of Spanish flu appeared in spring of 1918 while the first reports of the swine illness were in the fall of that year.

U.S. Air Force Study Proposed 2009 Influenza Pandemic in 1996

On June 17, 1996, the U.S. Air Force released Air Force 2025, “a study designed to comply with a directive from the chief of staff of the Air Force to examine the concepts, capabilities, and technologies the United States will require to remain the dominant air and space force in the future.” In the unclassified study, the College of Aerospace Doctrine, Research, and Education at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama posed several “fictional representations of future situations/scenarios” likely to arise
In Chapter 5, the authors present a timeline figure representing “plausible history.” In 2009, according to the figure, influenza will kill 30 million people. “A similar influenza pandemic occurred in the past,” a footnote explains, making a reference to the influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919, described as “one of the worst human catastrophes on record. It has been estimated that more than 20 million people around the world died during the epidemic, and of the 20 million people who suffered from the illness in the United States, approximately 850,000 died

Rumsfeld's growing stake in Tamiflu

The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.
Rumsfeld served as Gilead (Research)'s chairman from 1997 until he joined the Bush administration in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.

Was the Alarm over Swine Flu Justified?

Like a patient suffering from a particularly tenacious case of, well, the flu, the H1N1 virus seemed to gain ground and then lose it over the weekend, leaving health officials cautious but hopeful that the disease might be on the wane. The number of confirmed infections continues to rise, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting 898 infections in 18 countries as of May 3, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tallying 226 confirmed cases in 30 U.S. states. The continuing spread led Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to predict on Sunday that the WHO might soon raise its pandemic alert level from phase 5 to the highest stage, phase 6, which would indicate that a full flu pandemic was underway. "The virus has arrived, I would say, in most of the country now," said Anne Schuchat, interim deputy director for science and public health at the CDC.

Swine flu: the worst is yet to come in autumn, warns Alan Johnson

Alan Johnson said that the lesson of past pandemics was that initially mild outbreaks had been followed by something "much more serious".
His comments came as the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in Britain rose to 18, including two children, with as many as 716 possible patients now being tested. Meanwhile the Health Protection Agency confirmed that a Mexican pilot was one of the 18 cases in Britain. He has since left the country. An independent school in London has been closed after a 14-year-old girl contracted the virus from a traveller who had recently returned from Mexico, in the third known case of person-to-person transmission inside the UK.
Jenny Stephen, headmistress of South Hampstead High School, wrote to parents to announce that it would be closed until at least Thursday, cancelling the leavers' ball, after a Year Nine pupil became infected.

Tamiflu linked to abnormal behaviour

Influenza patients between 10 and 17 who took Tamiflu were 54 per cent more likely to exhibit serious abnormal behaviour than those who did not take the antiflu drug, a final report from a Japanese Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry research team, said.
The team, led by Yoshio Hirota, a professor at Osaka City University, studied the cases of about 10,000 children under 18 who had been diagnosed with influenza since 2006.
It will soon submit the report to a safety research committee of the ministry's Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council.
"The link with Tamiflu can't be ruled out," the report said. "New research should be carried out, focusing on serious abnormal behaviour."

Swine flu alert clears old stock of Tamiflu

It is almost three years since we faced the hysteria of an avian flu epidemic, when governments bought billions of dollars of Tamiflu – the same anti-viral now being promoted to combat a supposed swine flu pandemic.  The shelf life of Tamiflu also happens to be three years.

The World Health Organization has, at the time of writing, increased its threat level to five, which means governments can activate their pandemic plans – and start handing out Tamiflu drugs. This is extremely convenient for governments that would have very soon have to dispose of billions of dollars of Tamiflu stock, which they bought to counter avian flu, or H5N1.  The US government ordered 20 million doses, costing $2bn, in October, 2005, and around that time the UK government ordered 14.6 million doses.  Tamiflu’s manufacturer, Roche, has confirmed that the shelf life of its anti-viral is three years.

The Current Flu Outbreak - How Dangerous Is It?

Frankly, it's too early to tell. There are claims that the number of cases is overstated and signs that they are understated. I'll present the evidence on both sides. A pandemic, by definition, spreads to all the population rapidly and, so far, we are a long way from that. Even the average flu season in the US kills 30 to 35 thousand people annually, so it is wise to keep this all in perspective. This is a strong virus, which has killed a few people, and it is just getting started. Some hospitals report that many people infected have fairly mild symptoms, but there may be more than one strain out there. The CDC reports that not all flu victims have the swine flu. A deadly virus such as the 1918-1919 flu epidemic was not mild on anyone and hundreds of thousands died. This week, I'll offer some advice on how to protect yourself naturally, without having to line up for dangerous vaccines or take expensive "anti-viral" drugs with all their side effects. As with other national

First genetic analysis of swine flu reveals potency

The Flu continues to spread around the world, with cases now confirmed from more than a dozen countries, from Hong Kong to Canada.
Yet the first genetic analysis of how well this virus transmits from person to person concludes that it spreads barely well enough to keep itself going.
The analysis also suggests the virus may have started circulating as long ago as January. But because there have been so few cases to analyse, the calculation is uncertain. It could have started more recently, or as far back as September. Nicholas Grassly of Imperial College London and Andrew Rambaut of the University of Edinburgh, UK, have analysed the rate of spread. Their analysis is based on the small mutations that have accumulated in almost two dozen genetic sequences produced so far, from

DEADLINE LIVE EXCLUSIVE:
Mexican Swine Flu May Have Originated at US-Owned
 Pig Breeding Farm

The recent swine flu outbreak taking place in Mexico may have originated at a US-owned pig-breeding farm by the name of Granjas Carroll (aka Carroll Farms), which is owned, in part by the Smithfield Food Company. Smithfield also promotes the consumption of genetically-altered foods, and even owns certain genetic lines of pork breeding. On April 12 of 2009, before the swine flu outbreak was covered by mainstream media outlets, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada broke a story on how Carroll Farms was polluting the drinking water near the towns of La Gloria and Perote, in Veracruz.

Is Swine Flu A Biological Weapon?

There are some factors that suggest the swine flu killing people in Mexico may be a biological weapon, but obviously no such conclusion can be drawn at this time. The World Health Organization and the U.S. government have been quick to deny such claims.

The swine flu virus is described as a completely new strain, an intercontinental mixture of human, avian and swine viruses. Tellingly, there have been no reported A-H1N1 infections of pigs.

According to a source known to former NSA official Wayne Madsen, “A top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, concluded that H1N1 possesses certain transmission “vectors” that suggest that the new flu strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon. Madsen claims that his source, and another in Indonesia, “Are convinced that the current outbreak of a new strain of swine flu in Mexico and some parts of the United States is the result of the introduction of a human-engineered pathogen that could result in a widespread global pandemic, with potentially catastrophic consequences for domestic and international travel and commerce.”

WHO to raise swine flu alert level to 5

Considering the rapidly increasing number of confirmed swine flu cases, WHO officials have decided to consider raising the pandemic alert level to phase 5. Swine Influenza (swine flu) caused by type A influenza, regularly leads to influenza outbreaks among pigs. The virus does not normally infect humans.

Confirmed sufferers in the United States and Mexico, however, are believed to have spread the disease to their families and others in close contact.

The alert level was increased to 4 on Monday, and WHO officials now say they will be forced to declare a phase 5 alert soon.

Swine Flu - Connecting the Dots
by Greg Nick
I was 18 years old in 1976. I didn't pay much attention to the scares broadcast over the radio and television about the 'Swine Flu' but I do remember them. I was still living in New Jersey at the time and I remember the panic that was felt in the community. We were only about an hour away from Fort Dix where a young soldier of 19 died from this strange new flu. It was found later that many soldiers had been indeed exposed to this influenza, yet they were not ill. The military and the CDC were busily looking for a magic bullet to innoculate the populace with, starting of course with the men in Fort Dix. The magic bullet however became the death ray. The people innoculated with the Swine Flu vaccine became sick even if they hadn't been before. Not only had they become vaccine injured, some never recovered from the after effects and died.

Florida Hospital Caught in Swine Flu Cover-Up?

NaturalNews) A case of swine flu was diagnosed today in at Florida Hospital and disclosed in an email authored by its chief medical officer, but the infection was immediately denied by Florida Hospital and Orange County health officials, who claimed in a press conference, "There have been no confirmed cases of swine flu by the CDC in Central Florida."

Technically, that may be true. The CDC takes time to independently confirm swine flu infections in its own labs, as it does not recognize anyone else's lab results. During this time, even though doctors treating the patient may have independently confirmed a swine flu infection on their own, hospitals and health authorities can deny the existence of any "confirmed" cases of swine flu.

Obama seeks $1.5 billion for swine flu as cases jump

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama asked Congress on Tuesday for an additional $1.5 billion to fight swine flu as the confirmed caseload jumped to 65 people across six states in what doctors fear may become a pandemic.
Lawmakers convened an emergency hearing on Capitol Hill to assess the government's preparedness for a more severe outbreak.
"With a new infectious agent you don't sit back and wait and hope for the best. You take bold steps, and then you pull back if you need to," Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a news briefing

CDC: U.S. flu deaths likely as outbreak spreads

At least seven people were in U.S. hospitals with swine flu as the number of cases nationwide rose to 68 on Tuesday and a federal health official warned that deaths were likely.
Most of the nation's confirmed cases were in New York City, where the health commissioner said "many hundreds" of schoolchildren were ill with what was "most likely swine flu." The city announced 45 confirmed cases, all affiliated with a Catholic high school. Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.

Obama orders active measures to deal with swine flu

WASHINGTON, April 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered his administration to take active and aggressive measures to deal with swine flu, which has infected at least 20 people in the United States.
As one of the measures, the administration declared a public health emergency on Sunday.     There are 20 cases have been confirmed of the epidemic in the United States, said Richard Besser, acting director of Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at a press briefing held in the White House on Sunday.
According to Besser, there were eight confirmed cases in New York City, seven in California, two in Texas, two in Kansas and one in Ohio.
"As we look for cases of swine flu, we are seeing more cases of swine flu. We expect to see more cases of swine flu," said Besser

 Swine Flu and Martial Law

As the AP video here reports, countries around the world are reacting to the Swine Flu (H1N1 ) outbreak in Mexico with quarantines and travel warnings. The United Nation’s World Health Organization convened an emergency meeting Saturday to develop a response to the “pandemic potential” emerging from Mexico (although the threat is apparently not considered serious enough to prompt officials in the United States to close the border).

If the outbreak indeed turns into a global pandemic, as WHO seems to think, we can expect not only quarantines, but the imposition of martial law in the United States. In fact, the government has planned for just such a scenario for some time now.

In late 2007, the Bush administration issued a “directive” establishing a “National Strategy for Public Health and Medical Preparedness” based on Biodefense for the 21st Century (see  PDF). HSPD 21, short for Homeland Security Presidential Directive (signing statement bypassing Congress), defines “catastrophic health event” as “any natural or manmade incident, including terrorism, that results in a number of ill or injured persons sufficient to overwhelm the capabilities of immediate local and regional emergency response and health care systems.”

Swine flu: fears of pandemic rise as Mexico death toll reaches 80

The death toll from an outbreak of a human swine flu virus has risen to more than 80 in Mexico as new suspected cases have been reported as far apart as Auckland in New Zealand and New York in the United States.
The World Health Organisation said at least 81 people had died from severe pneumonia caused by the flu-like illness in Mexico. It said the virus has pandemic potential but it has stopped short of issuing a worldwide alert, while it gathers more information. The New Zealand government announced today it was "likely" that ten students have who had recently returned from Mexico have contracted the virus. Eight students at a school in the Queens area of New York are "likely" to have contracted the virus, according to the New York Times.
Jo Tuckman reports from Mexico City Link to this audio
In London, tests showed that a member of cabin crew on a British Airways flight from Mexico City did not have swine flu. The man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital yesterday with "flu-like symptoms" after landing at Heathrow.

Container of swine virus explodes on Swiss train

A container of flu virus samples packed in dry ice exploded on a Swiss train, injuring one person but posing no other risks to humans, police said on Tuesday. Skip related contentThe box held vials of swine flu virus, although a different strain than the H1N1 variety that has caused about 150 deaths in Mexico and infected people in the United States, Canada, Spain and Britain. A technician was transporting the container on Monday night to the Swiss national flu centre in Geneva, where scientists are developing a flu test for humans, police said.
One woman was hurt when the box exploded in reaction to the dry ice used to keep the samples cold. After consulting virus specialists, the police decided to stop the St. Gallen to Geneva train before it entered the station in Lausanne. The virus specialists confirmed that the samples being transported posed no risks to humans, police said

Swine flu H1N1: evolution of a virus

The influenza strain that has struck Mexico and the United States involves, in many cases, a never-before-seen strain of the H1N1 virus. The flu virus is notorious for its ability to mutate and evolve new features that allows it to escape the immune defence systems of its victims. The appearance of new flu strains is therefore a perennial problem for doctors and scientists.

And experts warned last night that it may be too late to contain the new outbreak, given how widespread the known cases are. If the confirmed deaths are the first signs of a pandemic, then cases are probably incubating around the world by now, said Dr Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota.

 THE SWINE FLU FIASCO

In 1976 I was working in the far north of Australia amongst Aborigines. I observed, in one community of only a few hundred people, when they were given the flu vaccine (probably the Victorian strain but this detail does not really matter because nobody outside a few selected individuals really knows what is in any particular batch), six men died suddenly soon afterwards. They were not all 'old’. One was in his early twenties. A few weeks later, in another community I found that individuals with heart or potential heart problems or diabetes were particularly likely to drop dead soon after being given the vaccine.

Obviously, there was a problem with some batches of the flu vaccine.

Swine flu: two admitted to hospital in Scotland as world braces for more cases

Their admission has reignited fears that swine flu may have arrived in the UK although there have been no confirmed reports of the virus infecting anyone in Britain. British officials remain on high alert as scores of travellers return from the centre of the outbreak as the United States government declared a public health emergency. More than 80 people have died in Mexico after contracting a flu-like virus.

The vast majority of suspected cases of H1N1 have been found in people who have recently returned to their home countries. Ten "highly likely" cases have been reported in Auckland and swabs have been sent urgently to a World Health Organisation (WHO) laboratory in Melbourne, Australia.

U.S. Declares Public Health Emergency Over Swine Flu

American health officials on Sunday declared a public health emergency over increasing cases of swine flu, saying that they had confirmed 20 cases of the disease in the United States and expected to see more as investigators track down the path of the outbreakWe are seeing more cases of swine flu,” Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control, said in a news conference in Washington. “We expect to see more cases of swine flu. As we continue to look for cases, I expect we’re going to find them.”

U.S. fears possible deaths as flu virus spreads

WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - A top official at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Sunday she feared some people in the United States would die as a new strain of swine flu spreads.

The agency's Dr. Anne Schuchat said in a telephone briefing with reporters that officials are preparing for a possible spread of the illness beyond the 20 cases confirmed in the United States and added, "I do fear that we will have deaths."

All of the U.S. cases have been reported to be mild, but the swine flu has killed up to 81 people in Mexico

CDC confirms Queens high school students have swine flu; National state of emergency declared

The swine flu was confirmed in eight Queens prep school students Sunday, prompting the federal government to declare a public health emergency across the United States. Suspected cases popped up from New Zealand to France and some countries began warning their citizens not to travel to America as fears of a global pandemic grew.

The White House warned citizens to expect many more cases of the new swine flu, which has killed 71 people and sickened 1,384 in Mexico. A total of 20 US cases have been reported in five states, all mild and non life-threatening. Mayor Bloomberg urged New Yorkers to stay home if they develop any flu symptoms, but also tried to head off a panic that could flood hospital emergency rooms.

Briton quarantined as killer flu spreads

DEADLY strain of flu that combines elements of swine, avian and human viruses could spread around the world after emerging simultaneously in Mexico and the United States, experts warned yesterday.

Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organisation, declared the disease a “public health event of international concern” after an emergency meeting in Geneva last night. She said the disease had “pandemic potential” and urged all countries to keep a close watch for outbreaks of influenza-like illness. A British Airways cabin crew member was taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms yesterday afternoon after falling ill on a flight from Mexico City to Heathrow. The Health Protection Agency said it was keeping a close eye on the situation. Britons are not being advised to avoid travelling to affected areas, although anyone visiting those destinations or who has recently returned should consult a doctor if they experience flu-like symptoms.
